Building Organizational Capacity through Convening Community Stories

Building Organizational Capacity through Convening Community Stories Stories have always been the heartbeat through which communities are bound and the footsteps by which organizations bridge their mission to the outside world. With the advent of digital media and social technology, an organization's ability to create, disseminate, and thus challenge dominant modes of mass media has arrived. Community centric storytelling puts the role of the storyteller in the hands of the communities we serve and places active participants in the realm of social communities through the practice of transparency and authenticity. This lecture will explore specific digital storytelling examples that convene community and give it voice—as well as align with your organizational mission(s).

You Posted What on Facebook? Identifying and Managing Legal Risks in Social Media Understanding the legal risks associated with new media or platforms is difficult under the best circumstances. Inevitably, some organizations or people are overcautious; others are overly free. Social media and digital media offers unparalleled access to creative tools, new art forms like mash-ups, almost frictionless distribution through social media platforms, and, as a result, they jumble many of the traditional legal approaches to media and technology. This lecture will cover the basic legal structures governing free expression, intellectual property, and privacy and how these are all changing in the age of digital and social media. Kraig Baker focuses on advising clients with licensing transactions across the full range of issues in media, entertainment, technology, advertising, privacy and Internet matters, with a particular emphasis on digital media and entertainment. He is also an adjunct professor to the MCDM program at the UW, where he has taught classes on Digital Media Law and Policy since 2002 and teaches the law module in the Advanced Interactive Marketing certificate program at the UW.

You Say You Want A Revolution? Generational Change and Citizen Engagement Technological developments and impacts do not occur in isolation. When television arrived, it both crystallized the new superpower status of the United States ("that country can do anything") and extended the American cultural sensibility far wider and deeper than any military might could do. So too do the advent of 24/7 digital media shape how we understand and engage with society -- including what we think comes with the job of being a citizen. This talk will discuss how this is becoming apparent in generational changes among Americans. David Domke is a Professor and Chair in the UW Department of Communication, and the author of two books: God Willing?: Political Fundamentalism in the White House, the “War on Terror,” and the Echoing Press (Pluto Press, 2004), and The God Strategy: How Religion Became A Political Weapon in America (Oxford Press, 2008 and 2010).

Hanson Hosein Storyteller Uprising: Trust and Persuasion in the Digital Age With the decline of traditional journalism, there’s an increased need for trusted information. This presents a huge opportunity to individuals, communities, companies and organizations. They can fill that void by telling their own multimedia stories, building their own channels, thereby serving as trusted sources in their own right. That’s the “uprising” — people seizing control of communication by building ongoing credible connection through story and digital technology. We'll discuss why this has happened, and what this means for communication strategies. Hanson Hosein is the Director of MCDM program at the UW and specializes in storytelling, social media strategies and new models of communication. Hanson is an Emmy Award winner and former NBC News war correspondent, backpack journalist and investigative producer. He was recently named "Most Influential" by Seattle Magazine for his work as educator and storyteller.
